ABOUT US

In 2007 a Wellness Project was developed as a means of community health and awareness in association with the Quloobul Moe'mieneen Mosque, which operates under the auspices of the Goodwood Islamic Society (GIS). This project was initiated by Sheikh Ebrahiem Tofa, Imaam and spiritual leader of GIS, together with a few resident medical practitioners in the form of an annual Wellness Day. The project gained further traction in 2016 when Sheikh Tofa gathered a committee to grow his vision for a fully functional medical facility. In February 2016, the first official meeting was held for the now named Goodwood Islamic Society – Wellness Centre.

With gracious donations from the community and basic medical supplies from medical practitioners on the committee, a Wellness Day was held on the 13th August 2016. The success of this day kick-started the centre as more practitioners flocked to this great cause. Through numerous meetings, this vision later materialized into a fully functioning Wellness Centre attached to the Goodwood Mosque. What started out as a basic GP service on 3rd September 2016 has now grown into a bustling Saturday service consisting of medical doctors, a cosy but fully functional dental practice and numerous allied health practitioners servicing those in need, at no charge.

The GIS – Wellness Centre offers completely free medical services to pensioners, the unemployed and disabled persons residing in the Northern Suburbs, irrespective of race, creed, nationality or religious persuasion. When the centre opened in September 2016 we initially had 23 patient-practitioner visits which has now grown to nearly 4 times this number of visits per month over the past year. With a total of over 700 patient-practitioner visits to date, this is 700 visits for which patients have been spared going to the Day Hospital or having to pay for medical services.

These statistics could undoubtedly have been much higher if the centre was able to accommodate a higher patient load. It unfortunately functions under specific time and space constraints, limiting the number of practitioners who can operate simultaneously. The way forward for the Wellness Centre is to gather more sponsorship, increase donations and expand our practitioner database. Achieving this will allow us to provide even more medical services, accommodate more patients, extend the operating hours and provide additional service days during the week. We humbly request your assistance in this regard.

If you are a medical practitioner and would be interested in dedicating but a few hours of your free time every other month toward helping patients in need, or if you are not in the medical field, but are by the means to sponsor/contribute toward the Wellness Centre whether it be equipment or monetary your donation will be appreciated. Whether you are a practitioner and helping patients directly or a sponsor providing supplies to sustain this project, your contribution will be in the service of mankind and part of building a prosperous community for all.

BOOKING AN APPOINTMENT

The Goodwood Islamic Society – Wellness Centre offers completely free medical services to those in need irrespective of race, creed, nationality or religious persuasion. We operate strictly on an appointment basis so that we may dedicate an appropriate amount of time for each patient and provide the best quality of healthcare at the level of a private practice. Our service is run by volunteers/medical practitioners who dedicate their free time in the service of mankind with no expectation of any payment or reward. All practitioners are verified by the Health Professions Council of South Africa so all patients may rest assured they will be treated by a professional. The facility is sustained purely by donations from the community and gracious sponsors who contribute when they can. For this reason, unfortunately all services have a limitation and hence only patients who are eligible for the service and fit the criteria may be seen at the Wellness Centre. For now we may only cater for those truly in need in our coverage area.
